Chinese Herbs for Uterine Fibroids
Acupressure to Move Blood and Qi in
the Uterus
By: Catherine Browne, L.Ac., MH, Dipl.Ac.
Uterine fibroids are considered a type of abdominal mass in Chinese medicine and are treatable with Chinese herbs up to 6 cm. Larger fibroids are not typically treated effectively with Chinese herbs. Small to medium size uterine fibroids can be reduced to an acceptable level and often eliminated with Chinese medicine. There are several underlying causes of fibroids in Chinese medicine, and one or more root causes can be involved with the condition as they are interrelated.
Liver Qi Stagnation Leading to Uterine Fibroids
In Chinese medicine, the Liver organ system is closely related to Uterus Blood and the menstrual cycle. The Liver, in Chinese medicine, influences the movement of Qi throughout the body, and thus, any mass forming in the Uterus, including fibroids, would likely have an element of Liver Qi Stagnation. Soothing the Liver with Chinese herbs is a rather straightforward therapy, but utilizing guided Qi Gong meditations to release suppressed anger and resentment can also be especially beneficial. Liver Qi Stagnation would be especially indicated with easy anger, frustration, abdominal pain that comes and goes, and pain along the lower ribs.
Release Acupressure Point LV 3 (Taichong or Great Surge) to Resolve Liver Qi Stagnation:
Liver 3 is located on the
dorsum of the foot, in
the depression just distal
to the junction of the first
and second metatarsal bones.
Blood and Qi Stasis in the Lower Jiao
All abdominal masses indicate Blood and Qi Stagnation. The likely path of imbalance with uterine fibroids during modern times would likely begin with Qi Stagnation due to Liver Qi Stagnation. In Chinese medicine, where Qi goes, Blood goes, and eventually Blood stagnation would develop. Additionally, trauma due to surgery, improper sexual activity such as having sex during menstruation, and heavy blood loss during chilbirth can also attribute to Blood Stagnation leading to uterine fibriods.
At the point when Blood Stagnation develops, fixed pain would likely develop with Blood Stagnation along with heavy menstrual bleeding. There are many herbs such as red sage, red peony, and carthamus that help to break up blood stagnation, but all would be utilized in formulas rather than as single herbs. Proloned Blood stagnation and heavy menstrual cycles can also lead to Blood Deficiency and deficient heat form Yin Deficiency.
Tonify Acupressure Point Sp 10 (Xuechai or Sea of Blood) to Move Blood and Qi in the Lower Jiao
Spleen 10 is located on the
medical portion of the
quadriceps femoris. To locate,
center palm on knee cap with
thumb medial; pointer finger
tip will fall at Spleen 10.
Palpate for tenderness.
Cold Phlegm Obstructing the Flow of Blood and Qi in the Uterus
Dampness and pathogenic phlegm prevent the free flow of Blood and Qi in the body. Dampness can develop due to Spleen Qi Deficiency, as the Spleen helps to control dampness in the body. Spleen Qi Deficiency can develop for a number of reasons including familial deviancies indicated by a genetic disposition to hypoglycemia or diabetes. Additionally, poor dietary habits including the over consumption of sweets, processed carbohydrates, iced drinks, and an overconsumption of raw foods can also damage the Spleen function in Chinese medicine. Spleen Qi tonics reinforce the health of the Spleen function and thus alleviated Dampness.
External Cold Phlegm can develop due to prolonged exposure to damp conditions; sitting on cold rocks or cement would be discouraged for women along with sitting in wet bathing suits for long periods of time. Exposure to cold climates for prolonged period would also contribute to an external invasion of cold and the body's inability to protect itself through the Wei Qi (or loosely the immune system). True Cold in the Uterus would be marked by sharp pain with uterine fibroids aggravated by cold conditions. Qi tonics are Yang and warming in nature to help alleviate cold conditions and reduce internal Dampness. As external cold and damp develop in to internal Dampness, the condition can be rather tenacious and takes time to reverse. With true Internal cold, Yang tonics can be advantageous.
