PMS Remedy and Chinese Herbs.
By: Catherine Browne, L.Ac., MH, Dipl.Ac.
In Chinese medicine a normal menstrual period should
be pain free with a modest amount of bright red blood.
Pain, dark blood and emotional fluctuations are signs of
imbalance that can be corrected with Chinese medicine.
There are number of different patterns that can present
with menstrual irregularities, and understanding these
patterns can help to more effectively choose herbal
formulas that will bring balance back to the body.
There is often more than one pattern responsible for
PMS, PMDD and menstrual disorders. In Chinese medicine,
hormonal health is maintained primarily by the Liver &
Kidney energetic systems, so many menstrual disorders
are associated with the (Chinese) Liver & Kidney.
Here are the most common patterns:
Liver Qi Stagnation
In Chinese medicine, the Liver controls menstrual blood, and
Kidney Deficiency
A pattern of menstrual disorders with Kidney Yang Deficiency will often include back soreness before menstruation, tiredness, watery menstrual blood, diarrhea just before menstruation, cramps after menstruation begins, tinnitus, or a feeling of cold in the body. This type of disorder would benefit from Yang tonic therapy such as Ancestor Treasure Formula.
Kidney Yin Deficiency presents with night sweats, back soreness, and a dry throat. This type of imbalance is more common in menstrual disorders nearing menopause, and can be treated with Yin Valley Formula.
Spleen Qi Deficiency
The Spleen meridian also traverses the reproductive area, and is partially responsible for the production of blood, and has a strong influence on reproduction and menstruation. Blood deficiency would be seen in menstrual disorders with brown blood. Spleen Qi Deficiency patterns often present with white or clear vaginal discharges that can be sticky in nature, general fatigue, eating disorders, obesity, or lack of appetite. Restore the Middle Way Formula is an effective Spleen Qi Tonic.
