Emotional Aspects of Fibromyalgia According to TCM:

Internal Pathogenic Dampness is a common diagnostic thread when Fibromyalgia is treated with Chinese medicine. The dampness causes Qi stagnation and pain in different parts of the body. Dampness will damage the Spleen over time and the resulting emotion is neediness (see Earth Element Imbalances).

Those with FMS tend to be over-needy, or cloying in almost a childlike way. The fibromyalgia patient desperately craves empathy from those around her, and yet this very need sets her up in an endless cycle of pain and disappointment. The more those with FMS demand attention and care from others, the more their support system pushes them away creating an even greater need for empathy and a hunger for someone to meet her needs. The result is that the inappropriate tendency to ask too much from others grows out of the lack of nurturing experienced, and there are fewer and fewer people willing to meet the ever growing needs.

This experience carries over to the medical community as well. FMS patients are considered "high needs" patients, and very few doctors can afford to hang on to a patient who endlessly demands more time and attention from an already over-stressed staff. An office with a 10% FMS population will often experience 90% of their "issues" from the FMS patients.

The dirty little secret in the medical community is that fibromyalgia patients are treated as hot potatoes; rather than their needs being met and their disease being cured, they are passed on to another health care provider when they become too demanding. Of course, the patient is never told this, nor is there ever a confrontation. Rather, the patient is told that there is a specialist, or someone more experienced with whom they will have better results. This always pleases the FMS patient who happily transfers their 4 inch medical file to the next doctor as they progress knowing that they are unique and need very special care...which they probably will not find at the next stop either.

In Chinese medicine, emotional imbalances can lead to physical disease, or physical disease can lead to emotional imbalances. In this case, it is helpful to know if the chicken or the egg came first as it is difficult to fully heal the physical problem if the emotional scarring is still present.

Earth imbalances would be the result of a lack of nurturing, especially from the mother, in infancy or childhood. Additionally, a mother who over-nurtures a child, smothering them with inappropriate amounts of care and attention fretting over every little thing will have a similar result. Babies who were born prematurely and left by their hapless mother to fight for their lives in a hospital are set up for Earth imbalances also.  Read More...
