In Western medicine and Eastern medicine, the immune system is a functional system that includes many organs and interrelated functions. Chinese medicine focuses on maintaining balance throughout the human organism to maintain a healthy immune system.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a theory called the '8 Principles' that delegates disease patterns in to Yin Yang qualities as such:
Yin - Yang Interior - Exterior Hot - Cold Deficiency - Excess
Exterior
In Chinese medicine, the immune system begins with the Protective Qi, or Wei Qi. Wei Qi circulates just below the skin during the day and it keeps pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and toxins at the exterior of the body. A strong Wei Qi wards off pathogens. If the Wei Qi is a bit weak, pathogens or weather changes can 1st move to the exterior level of the body where they can cause a cold or flu. The body must have abundant Qi to maintain Wei Qi.
Interior
If the Wei Qi is very weak, pathogens can penetrate down to the internal organs and cause more chronic & serious disease patterns. Organ systems that affect the immune functions in Chinese medicine:
- The Lung system is the most exterior organ and is the first internal organ typically affected by exterior pathogens. The Lung system also includes skin and is associated with Wei Qi and the ability to have a strong defense.
- The Kidney system includes bone marrow (and blood production) in Chinese medicine and is closely associated with DNA and familial attributes of disease patterns. Abundant Jing, or Essence is vital in maintaining a healthy immune system.
- The Spleen plays a central role in blood production and is responsible for how we utilize nutrients vital for a healthy immune response. The Spleen system also influences the amount of internal dampness that accumulates in the body. Internal Damp Phlegm creates stagnation throughout the body and throughout the lymphatic system impeding the lymph fluid from transporting toxins out of the body.
Deficiency
When their is not enough Qi and Blood circulating to the organs to properly nourish them, the organs become weak and susceptible to pathogens and disease. Deficient conditions would include a poor appetite and the person would be tired.
Excess
If Organ Systems become diseased, the proper systems of elimination such as the lymphatic system, Liver, skin, and Kidneys will become less affective and accumulations will occur. Health in the body relies on the constant movement of Blood, Qi, and interstitial fluids; if fluids stagnate, they heat up just as a stagnant pond accumulates bacteria and algae and heats up. Excess conditions would be exacerbated with pressure.
Yin - Yang
Any disease pattern can be delineated in to a Yin Yang imbalance. Yin diseases would likely be cold and deficient in nature. Yang diseases would have heat and excesses.
Hot - Cold
Disease patterns can further be broken down in to Hot/Cold. Cold conditions would improve with heat and the person would move slowly. Hot conditions would be amplified with heat and the person would be agitated.
In Chinese medicine, all chronic diseases have a "root" cause, and a "branch" manifestation. Cancer is generally seen as the branch manifestation of underlying deficiencies or Yin/Yang imbalances. Preventative health care that addresses the underlying deficiencies and imbalances with tonic herbs and preventing the manifestation of a serious disease pattern is more efficient that having to treat a later stage chronic imbalance that has compromised the internal immune system.
However, there are other formulas that are not tonics, and are only taken as needed to push pathogens out. Evil Airborne Warrior Formula is only taken as needed. It is anti-viral, with multiple diaphoretic's, and is often taken preventatively when traveling or going into crowded places where you may come into contact with viruses. Also, Curing Pills Formula are taken for any acute digestive upset as needed. Both of these formulas should be on hand at all times for acute conditions.
